Basketball Bombshell - Who Can Defeat Us?

By Rengel Ueki '09

Lately the Xavier Navigators have been beating most of the schools here on Chuuk, FSM and putting on nail-biting performances that have had Xavier crowds going wild on campus.

The girl’s team has never lost to all the teams they have challenged. That is because of the great support of their coach, Jackie T., who has never doubted her team ever since the beginning. They have practiced long and hard ever since the beginning of the basketball season and their reward has always been victory. With the help of the team captains, Dilluchei Kikuo and Desi Yamase, and the new freshmen girls, the team is bound to go all the way to the finals. Particular praise goes towards “sharpshooter” Nicole Yamase, “game saver” Lupe Reimers and the new superstar, Roxie Moya, who handles the ball with ease.

They boys have only lost once to Sarem after losing some of their players. But so far they have been trying their best to stay on top. They have practiced long hours, running ‘suicides’ in the early mornings and training hard until the darkness in the afternoons. They have the support of their experienced coach, Chris Dwyer. Their hard work paid off in two memorable games against Mitzpah and Berea, where a single point in the final minutes of the game sent the Xavier crowds into hysteria. Their team captains have supported them from the beginning, with Dwayne’s insurmountable height and Eugene’s solid drives to the basket keeping them ahead on the scoreboard. The team consists of Lancaster, Michael, Alson, Eugene, Dwayne, Erik, Ron, Amaroy, O’Keefe and Sonny. Particular mention goes towards Lancaster, the Chuukese Sophomore that is making his debut on the Xavier team.

Math Wars

By Rengel Ueki (SO)

On Nov. 13 2006, the Freshmen and Sophomores had a battle of the brains. They fought in the Callaghan Hall solving basic algebra problems for the ‘X-Factor’ trophy.

Postponed until Monday, the competition involved 3 rounds. The first round was a time trial. Answer as many questions as you can in 60 seconds.

The second round was called ‘Spin the Bottle’. A team member had to spin around until his team found an answer, and then he had to run and touch the answer on posters around the hall. Tyrone and Hiromi got very dizzy!

The final round was ‘Final Jeopardy’. Each team had to solve a hard word problem and bet on how much they thought they had the correct answer.

Everyone was really anxious to get it over with. Some of the Sophomores said, “This is going to be a lose-lose situation. If we beat them they say we really tried to beat the kids, but if we lose then we lost to a bunch of freshmen!”

When the competition started it was really tight. It seemed that they took turns in getting the right answer. There was a lot of shouting and a lot of confusion.

In the end the freshmen were crowned victors. The scoring was confusing, and it is unsure who actually won. However, the aim of the day was to have fun and everyone certainly did.
On behalf on the Saintz, I want to congratulate the Praetorianz.

Xavier Basketball: Unbeatable

Xavier Day Predictions
Judging from last year’s Track & Field season, there is a lot of depth to both teams. Here are a few of the many stars from each team to look out for!

THE SPRINTERS

Tritorianz

Amaroy Marino
The obvious star of the shorter distances, the team will look to Ams for leadership and inspiration on Xavier day just as they did during the Track & Field meet last year.

Jeremiah Bugun
One of Xavier’s newest and most exciting T&F prospects, Jeremiah looks to be an excitement machine on Xavier day.

Universe Yamase
The leader for the girl’s squad this year, Uni has a surprising amount of speed and will be putting pressure on her opposition all day long on Xavier Day.

Roxy Moya
There is definitely a bright future for her in T&F and her performance on Xavier Day may springboard her straight into this coming Track & Field meet next March or whenever they have it.

Riantho Mazawa
One of the hottest prospects going into last year’s Track & Field meet, Riantho’s and everyone else’s hearts were broken when he was injured only three days before the first day of the meet. This Chuukese speedster will be looking to impress on Xavier Day and there is no doubt that he will do just that.

Michael Kigimnang
Michael, along with Jeremiah poses a serious threat to any other runners who do not take them seriously. A surprising amount of speed makes Michael a runner to be watched both this year and in years to come.

Jun Villazon
Jun is definitely in the top 3-5 runners at Xavier and is one of the main danger men in the Tritorianz team. The Tigerz will surely have to make him a marked man lest he take them by surprise.

Ronny Sipenuk
This Chuukese speed demon has stood out at the latest Tritorianz trainings and looks to be the biggest concern for the Tigerz as far a Freshmen go this year. He is averaging 2nd-1st place every training and must be addressed or he will take the Tigerz by surprise.

Megan Helgenberger
A speedster to rival Roxy, if she is in peak condition on the day, Megan will cause serious problems for the Tigerz unless she has quality competition all day.

Tigerz

Lupe Reimers
A crowd favorite at the Track & Field meet last year, Lupe will be wanting to put on a show for her last year as part of the sophomore/junior team.

Lancaster Walter
A gifted athlete, Lancaster will lend his talents to both the sprinters and the basketball team on the day.

Lu-A Kikuo
Possessing an amazing turn of pace, Lu-A has the ability to bring a crowd to their feet and is sure to do exactly that on Xavier Day.

Rothstein Remengesau
Rothstein looks to be the biggest threat to the seniors’ spotless record. A runner with both exceptional speed and power, Rothstein may be just what the Tigerz need to tip the balance against the Tritorianz.

LONG DISTANCE

Tritorianz

Dwayne Anefal
Dwayne was a member of the marathon team last year, so long distance running is not a new thing for him. This determined runner will be the driving force behind the Tritorianz marathon team this year and the Tigerz will need to think long and hard about who they match up against this gifted marathoner.

Jeremiah Bugun
Coming up for a second time, this multi-talented freshmen is also donating his talents to the long distance events as well as the sprints.

Rose Yatilman
Rose will lead the girls in the marathon and long distance events this year at Xavier Day. She was a solid performer for the girls’ squad last year and will form a solid base for the Tritorian girls to work off of this year at Xavier Day.

Tigerz

Joshua Thinsew
One of Dwayne’s team mates in the marathon last year, Joshua is the Marathon God, Marathonius’ gift to the Tigerz. He is a veteran long distance runner with around 2 years of marathon experience behind him.

David Alfred
This marathoner will give the Tigerz a good option in the many long distance events and will test the Tritorianz relative lack of depth in the marathon and long distance events mercilessly.

Jesse Panuel
Jesse is one of the solid marathoners at Xavier and will be invaluable to them in both the marathon event and also the long distance events. A good work ethic and excellent athletic ability makes this marathoner a real cause for concern for the Tritorianz.

Vanessa Midar
Take into account that she won some crazy championship that I can’t remember the name of last year at the Track & Field meet. A formidable opponent, Vanessa will cause huge headaches for the Tritorianz.

THE ENTERTAINERS

Tritorianz

Michael Mapa
Known mainly for his “lets make it clap” chant, Mapa has diversified his chants since Track & Field last year and now has many war cries which are all capable of whipping a crowd into a frenzy, but his super-fast lyrics in “lets make it clap” make him a crowd favourite.

Tigerz

Vincent Neth
Vincent’s energetic personality and loud voice make him the perfect cheer leader for the Tigerz. As seen so often at the various basketball matches at Xavier, Vincent has a natural ability to get any crowd excited.
