Physical Education at Xavier High School

HISTORY
There is reference in the old handbook to “fitness” that took place on Monday-Thursday from 3.30pm-3.45pm. The students could be excused from fitness and stay in the recreation house. The dress code was to be shorts and shirt. The WASC self-study report mentions a “school fitness program”. The mission statement of XHS says” we cultivate the …..physical….growth of the school community.”

There are organized sports, namely basketball, volleyball and track and field. There is a lot of resources and time given to the students who participate in these sports. However, the group makes up only about 10% of the student body. The boys have the opportunity to play different sports as part of their recreation. The girls however do not have this chance since they have to leave campus by 5.00pm each day.

PRESENT CHALLENGE
In the reorganization of the study time we removed fitness. We introduced compulsory study for all students from 3.30pm-5.00pm. This was mainly to address the female students’ problem of not completing their assignment and the high electricity bill incurred by the school. This has left the students with no time to get some sort of formal physical exercise during the school day.

The removal of 15 minute fitness session has actually been readily accepted by students and teachers. The reason for this reaction is it was too short and it there was no program. It was left to experience and mood of the fitness prefect. But the fact that very little attention is given to any sort of systematic physical education points to a glaring weakness in the present curriculum. All high school curriculums have a specific time for PE (physical education). In many of the Jesuit high schools, it is a core subject or it is required for graduation. Therefore, the administration and the teachers need to look into the possibility of implementing a PE program that it part of the six-day cycle.

PROPOSAL
1. Desha heads a committee to develop a PE program for Xavier. Senior students will be the opportunity to assist with PE.
2. That all students be required to take this class unless they are excused by the infirmarian.
3. The PE classes will take place in the 7th period and last for 45 minutes
4. The schedule for the PE classes follow the present master class schedule

EXAMPLE
A-day Fresh II and Junior I
B-day Soph II and Senior II
E-day Sop I and Senior I
F-day Fresh I and Junior II
