Andres Uherbelau '56

Mr. Andres Uherbelau was born on August 21, 1934 on the island of Angaur in Palau. He was baptized Catholic at an early age, and has been practicing his faith very seriously in all his life. He is married to former Rosania Saikemal of Palau and they have three grown daughters and one son, and six grandchildren.

For his education, Mr. Uherbelau completed his elementary school requirement at Mindszenty School in 1948, and spent a year at Father Duenas High School on Guam before he came to Xavier. Mr. Uherbelau is one of Xavier’s first four graduates of the Class of 1956. From 1957 to 1960, he attended the University of Hawaii on a special student loan and later received his BA degree in Business Administration and Management from UOG on a Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) Scholarship.

After his training, Mr. Uherbelau worked and held different government positions in Micronesia until his retirement in 1997. He began as an accounting officer for Palau Administration from 1961 to 1966; Palau District Treasurer, 1969-1970; TTPI Accounting Officer, 1970-1971; Administrative and Finance Officer for the Congress of Micronesia, 1971-1979; Director of Revenue and Taxation for Palau, 1979-1982; Director of Finance Department for Palau, 1982-1994 and Minister of State of Palau, 1994-1997. He also served on different boards, commissions, authorities, etc.

Mr. Uherbelau wrote and participated in the review of certain finance manuals and regulations for Palau. He is a recipient of commendations by resolutions of the Palau District Legislature in 1970 and Congress of Micronesia in 1979, including several certificates from different government agencies and entities.
